4A- Forming an Opportunity

1. Beginning Point- With Tesla implementing their cars and ideas into modern day society, we will slowly see mankind transition from driving cars into owning and riding self-driving cars. Because of this, there will be many people who will not be able to afford one of these cars, or simply they do not need the vehicle as much as it costs. An opportunity exists since there needs to be an Uber-like system that delivers self-driving cars at customer's requests and takes them wherever they choose as would a taxi or a Lyft.

2. Belief Description- The unmet need is that civilians and residents who cannot afford a self-driving car or do not use it as much (such as a resident in Manhattan) still need a way of transportation that is self-driving, in order to adapt to what would be every-day life.
A lot of people have this need, but is mainly for people who: desire to go from one place to another without taking their own self-driving car, people who cannot afford cars, people who live in metropolitan cities and do not feel that their use of the car will satisfy the cost of the self-driving car.
This need is new, and actually not yet real, because self-driving cars have not been fully implemented in every day society as of yet.
To meet this need now, people are: taking Uber, Lyft, or taxi, or finding another way of public transportation.
I am about 60% sure that this opportunity exists.

3. Prototypical Consumer- Consumers for this service include many demographics. Some of these include: teenagers who want to go to parties and/or a friend's house and have no ride, citizens who cannot afford cars, citizens who live in large metropolitan cities (such as Manhattan) and would rather have this service than paying full-price for a vehicle that they will seldom utilize, etc.

4. Interviews- The decision to interview a total of four people (two male and two female) ranging from elementary school ages to elders was made in order to get many points of views on the subject due to their different personalities.

5-6. Reflection- I learned just how difficult it would be to implement this service, since the costs of strictly licensing and rights to laws could exceed revenue itself, and that is not even including manufacturing, labor and other service costs. Surprisingly, the older interviewees were more reluctant to implement the service, due to them questioning on how this service will even be implemented. The younger interviewees were more hopeful and open to the idea of making the future more future-looking.

7. Summary- The original opportunity is still there. This service will be implemented at some point due to the fact that not every civilian will own a car; therefore, it is just a matter of figuring out the legal rights which might be easier said than done.
I do believe that the new opportunity is more accurate than originally simply because I have a better idea of what it would require as well as some thoughts that others would think and say about the service that I did not even think about previously.
I think that entrepreneurs should take consumer feedback VERY seriously, and always try to make their business as efficient and better for the consumer. However, it is true that there are things that go on inside the organization that a consumer does not know; therefore, the entrepreneur should try to adapt to the consumer's needs while keeping a firm structure and knowledge of the things he or she can and can not change.

  1. Hello Diego,
Your opportunity is very interesting! After reading your opportunity, I had a few questions. One of my questions is “Since the customers will be in self-driving vehicles, will no one be in the front seat or will there still be a driver?” Being in a Tesla, I know the driver has to touch the steering wheel from time to time for the car to continue driving in autopilot, but I don’t know about any other companies making self-driving cars. Furthermore, I would like to know the questions you asked the young children and the elderly. Are the questions the same? In addition, I also believe that customer service is very crucial. However, an entrepreneur’s business has to be somewhat stable with the organization and foundation of it, because there needs to be a plan that works for the business.

  2. Hey Diego,
I understand your point. There is a market for people who would prefer self driving cars. Those who can afford a chauffeur could save on that or people who just needs to focus on work or other things can just rely on technology. Nowadays many things run on autopilot but that doesn't mean that it's just as reliable. I personally wouldn't feel comfortable with a self driving car. I rather do the drive myself or get someone to take me; however the way of transportation.

  3. Hello Diego,

I believe as technology continues to advance this probably continue to grow in popularity. As of now it is still in the works and I personally am not sure if I would put all of my trust in it. I think your opportunity definitely has a chance in the near future. The only issue I would see is people maybe taking advantage of this taxi system. You could order it and people could easily strip the vehicle for parts. Also maintenance on these vehicles and having a place to store these vehicles.

  4. Diego,
Being able to hear out what the consumers needs are is a very important step of being an entrepreneur. Though the market isn't ready for the product, it is still good to get feedback so we can make the product more efficient and user friendly. So the fact that it isn't ready from the consumers point of view is a great thing because the product is great but can maximize its ability with time.

  5. Hey Diego,

I respectively disagree with your idea. I do not believe the world should turn to automated cars and as it is a flashy idea of what we think the future could be, I don't believe it will ever happen. Unless the government or some foreign body forces individuals to have autonomous cars, then they will never take over. Think about it, in a car today a real person drives there car. The autonomous car you describing would be primarily driven by an internal computer. I do not know about you, but I am not ready to trust a computer to drive me around. Something can always go wrong with a computer and I won't know how to fix it. If I drove the car myself, then any problem that arises, I will know how to deal with it. In essence, your idea of autonomous cars resembled the future and that excites people, but it will never come to fruition because a lot of people feel just like me and wish to drive their cars themselves.
